Description
WHAT DOES THE SPF NUMBER MEAN?
The SPF number tells you how long it may take you to burn after applying it, compared to not using any cream at all. As an example: if you can spend 10 minutes in sunlight without burning, an SPF10 lotion will multiply this “self-protection time” by 10, which equals 100 minutes.
But keep in mind that this is only an estimate, as it may not take you that long to burn off, depending on the season, the weather, or even your geographic location.
HOW DOES SPF WORK?
Active ingredients in sunscreens protect the skin by reflecting or absorbing UV rays and preventing sun damage. Physical (also called mineral) sunscreens reflect UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb them. The amount of filtered UV rays depends on the level of SPF you apply:
SPF15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
SPF30 blocks 96.7% of UVB rays
SPF50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
UVB rays can never be completely filtered, so it’s important to reapply SPF protection at least every 2 hours.
